Pilates is not a different world to Yoga and often both practises share same poses just cued differently and held longer or shorter. Yoga will take you to a pose rather than teach your body about postural alignment and recruitment of core before entering pose and the cueing of every movement to encourage body awareness is more present. In theory I say to many that if you cant do pilates then you should not enter Yoga as you will be acheiving the poses incorrectly and risking injury. Its a well known but not well documented fact that many knee surgeries and shoulder surgeries happen from a yoga class as the instructors do not quantify the participants or give as many options to often peer pressure will have people use their bodies incorrectly causing tendon and ligament strains or full ruptures for many which are avoidable. Pilates will enable you to prepare your body with breath alignment and awareness of movement to get into poses as well giving you a long toned strong functional body with awareness of why you may have sore lumbar spines, shoulders, neck or knees as Sandy Leo does huge amounts of coaching and teaching participants how and why we must use our bodies correctly especially if want longevity out of them. You can book in one on one or semi private – two on one at her private studio where a mix of machine and floor based work will bring you into your best body and there are two group classes – one in Birkenhead Primary 7.30pm on Monday night and the second at Flexa Studio — 160 Lake Road, Northcote. A concession card of 10 can be used at either and is only $160 or you can pay casual $18 per class.
